Day 58 ~ Tuesday August 27, 2019 Passau Germany on board the Viking Grand European Viking River Cruise

After breakfast we arrived in Passau, which you'll hear referred to as the "City of Three Rivers".  Our Last German City.
This is because Passau sits at the confluence of where the rivers Inn and the Ilz joined the Danube. Here we had a choice of a walking tour of Passau, or take a optional Full-day tour to Salzburg to see its popular Sound of Music sights including the Mirabell Gardens, the Great Salzburg Festival Hall, the Mondsee wedding church, etc.  We choice to stay in Passau since we have never seen this town before. The old town has so many picturesque squares, soaring towers, romantic lanes, and enchanting promenades.  It kinda makes you feel like your in Italy. Yes medieval Mediterranean peninsula with lots of cobblestone lanes, underpasses, and archways all over.  This is a picture I took this morning just before we left for our tour.  Love it love the reflections.

Up high on the hill is the Fortress which dates back to 1219.  Consists of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Back in the 13th century pilgrims would go up on their knees and pray each step with their knee that they take.   Great views from there as well.

Where the rivers meet

The magnificent St. Stephen's Cathedral with its three characteristic green onion-domed towers, is and highlight attraction.  It is located on the highest point of the old town and the site incorporates the remains of an earlier Gothic structure,  The cathedral contains one of the largest church organs in the world. with 17,974 pipes, 233 stops and 4 carillons. If you are lucky to be there at midday between May and September you can enjoy an organ concert by these mighty pipes.  It is packed in here. |Yes we are being treated to a concert on the largest cathedral organ in the world.  The sound is amazing.
Now to find a charming place for lunch.
Nice cold beer while waiting for our lunch
We split it.  Sure was good
