Hinged to the Arctic Circle and riding astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland occupies a unique place in the world. Born of fire, sculpted by ice and nibbled at the edges by the North Atlantic, the landscape is a kaleidoscope of fascinations. Iceland became fully independent in 1944. The primary language is Icelandic, a northern Germanic language descended from Old Norse. The mighty Mid-Atlantic Ridge, one of the most impressive geologic features on earth, cuts through the heart of this island, and Iceland is literally being pulled apart as the Northern Plate separates from the Eurasian Plate.
Reykjavik is the country's capital and largest city. It is home to the National Museum, tracing Iceland's Viking history. The striking Hallgrimskirkja Church offers sweeping views of the sea and nearby hills and volcanoes. There are many trendy restaurants offering fresh seafood, and the beautiful Harpa Concert Hall with its colorful glass is situated on the harbor. Reykjavik is home to many talented artists and musicians, as well and boasts of the most robust and successful economies to date. The south shore of Iceland is perhaps one of the prettiest and most rugged areas in all of Iceland. The landscape is dotted with volcanoes in every direction, fantastic waterfalls dressed with single and double rainbows, dark black sandy beaches with phenomenal basaltic rock columns, and wild seas, sea stacks, as well as fabulous puffin colonies.
Life is a journey and you are the only one holding the map...
