As this morning we cruise thru the Stockholm archipelago we are seeing a lot of islands around us, there are 24,000 of them, with beautiful wooden summer homes on them. There are bridges that connect inner area of the city to another and it seems that no matter where you are, the water isn't very far away. We spent our afternoon getting a feel for this city wandering through the cobblestones streets of the old town (Gamla Stan) and walking on the Strandvagen a lovely blvd that stretches along the city's endless waterfront. Just a beautiful city.
It first was a bus ride to get to the city because we were docked at a container port that was very large. So we took the number 76 that took us right at the Royal Palace.
They offer a HOHO bus here that takes you all around the city. We quickly grab a map from the nice lady at the HOHO bus. Great walking city, found out by looking at the map that Stockholm is built on a series of islands 14 of them. Stockholm means Log Island. They have a Royal Family in Sweden and the eldest daughter Victoria is in line to be Queen. They live here in the Royal Palace and have 2 children. The large park in the city was once a vegetable garden for the palace. There is also a special building the Noble prize organization operates from and where the Noble prize banquet is held. Noble was Swedish and invented Dynamite. He had no children so he had all his wealth donated to the fund organization. We learned a lot of history today.
