Day 20~ Saturday July 20, 2019 Longyearbyen Norway on the 34 day Baltic Spitsbergen & Icelandic Fjords Explorer

This  I think is one of the most northern cities in the World.  Located at 78 degrees north and yes its a bit nippy up here.
This is a coal miners town in fact it was settled by an American named Longyear and it produces a very rich coal which is still operational and ships most of it to Germany but still uses it to power the town.  The town is very small only around 1,000 residents.  Them main mode of transportation up here is sled dogs, snowmobiles some cars and a few trucks.
This is defiantly the "Land of the Midnight Sun".  24 hours of daylight in the summer and 24 hours of darkness in the winter.  There is day time Northern Lights up here.  Never have heard of that before.
There is a Big sled dog operation or camp a few miles out of town.  We visited it and there were several hundred dogs working at any given time, and puppies also.  Mix of Alaskan Husky and other breeds.  They said there food consist of a lot of seal for the fat intake for the winter.  They also sleep on raised wooden boxes about 3 feet off the ground,  They cuddle up in big heaps and keep each other warm
We docked here at the port of Longyearbyen
Here are some of the many doggies. All are named and very healthy
So many of them.

Thanks for coming with us.  Bob & Leslee
