Day 59 ~ Wednesday August 28, 2019 Melk Austria on board the Viking Grand European Cruise

Today we cruised through the narrow Strudengau valley region to reach the Wachau Valley where Melk was our first sightseeing stop. Then onto Krems.
We arrived at Melk early this morning and made our way up to the Abbey

 Just so beautiful

Melk magnificent Benedictine Abby is one of Europe's largest baroque monasteries. Our ship arrived shortly after breakfast and our tour today we were taken by coach to visit the Abby.  From the road we could see the bright yellow Melk Abby complex on top of the rocky hill and we were very grateful for the coach ride.
Melk Abbey itself has extensive exhibition rooms, containing all manner of scared and profane objects imaginatively displayed.  One of the exhibits was an idea by this man named Joseph 11 for the reusable coffin ( an invention you could say "died away " without success)  The church was amazing and in church was a Library which was the second most important room, holding some  100,000 books including manuscripts from before the 15th century to modern works.  The Abbey visit took a while as there was plenty to see and after the guided tour we had the choice of transferring back to the ship by coach or walking down to the Melk village and then making our own way back to the ship. We took the walking offer.  The village is a pretty pretty place and there was an opportunity to look in the shops and stop for a gelato for the both of us.

After we did the Abby in Melk it was all aboard by 1300 so we could cruise down the WachulaValley.
