April 05, 2017. Dubrovinik, Croatia on the Grand Mediterranean Cruise

In the very south of Croatia, on a separate enclave separated from the balance of the country by a Bosnian salient, Dubrovnik's encircling 13th century ramparts (15 miles in circumference) give the city an ambiance worthy of "The Game of Thrones" medieval TV series which has used it as a backdrop. Once a city/state which competed with Venice for dominance of the Adriatic, the city's power went into decline, but its walls were never breached by siege. Although severely damaged (now repaired) in an attack by the Serbs and Montenegrins in the fall of 1991, Dubrovnik's impressive medieval architecture and its beautiful Mediterranean landscape take your breath away and it has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The city still supplies many cruise ship (as well as other vessels') captains and seafood is the specialty of the restaurants. That said, there are dozens of stands in the plaza near the end of the Placa offering local liqueurs, candied citrus rinds, sugared almonds, fruits jams and the like for sale.  We walked all around the inside of the walls today from 9:00-3:00.  Then we decided to walk the wall.  It cost us 300 of there money which was about 60.00 canadian.  Yes that much to walk the perimeter of the inside of the old walled city.  But that's what you do when you come to Dubrovinik.  We walked up so many steep steep stairs as well.  We had our 10,000 steps in by 1100 am.  It really is breath taking here for sure.  All the roof tops are tiles and all different levels.  Just beautiful.  We are over night her so tomorrow we will do the Fort.  We also took a local bus and we to the end of a bus ride and back.  Tonight after dinner we have a local talent dance group coming in to do a show.

The sun was out but at 5:00 it started to sprinkle.

Just a taste of some of the stairs and levels
