Wow, there's land out there this morning; we haven't seen land since we set sail from Nuku Hiva. It hasn't bothered us at all. I love listening to the waves lapping against the bow or sides of our ship; or even crashing upon us.. Even thou it has been like bath water in this great big Pacific Ocean.
Our land ahoy was the Big Island, Hawaii; and we are sailing toward the dock at Hilo.
We arrived at 8:00AM and once our ship was cleared by the Immigration authorities then we were able to disembark. Imagine, placing our feet on solid ground. No rocking, staggering or bumping into wall's. It really was smooth I just thought that would sound better....
As we got off the ship it was raining alittle. We crossed the street and caught a cab to take us to the airport to get a rental car. Jessie the cab driver gave us a great price to see everything we wanted to see so we took his offer.
He decided that he would show us the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. There were everywhere. Big ones little ones, some smelled like chocolate, some smelled little vanilla.
The Orchid garden had almost every color of the rainbow.
After the gardens we went up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We could see the steam vents all around us. There was a visitor alert with high amounts of dangerous sulfur dioxide gas. Didn't smell too nice.
After going around the Kilauea Caldera on Kilaeuea Mt we visited the visitor center. Very interesting. We spent about an hour around the area. There is a 38 mile crater drive along the rim but it was closed due to high levels of sulfur gas. It ends from 3700 ft to the sea level. After this we proceeded to go to the Thurston Lava Tube.. Now that was weird walking though a hollowed out lava tube.
Pretty cool new experience for us. Lava tubes. Then it was onto the Macadamia nut factory. All kinds from chocolate to wasabi. Then we went to Rainbow Falls. But the sun was not out so no rainbow today.
What a great day now onto the next port Honolulu Oahu . And our last SPECIAL EVENT ON THE USS Missouri. Thanks for coming along with us. Leslee & Bob
